MEXICO CITY, D.F.
Walking Tour, Pasteleria, Tattoos, Cleansing Rituals, Architecture, Soup, Flor, Fauna and Fruits, Pork (yes, more!), Cow, Veggies, Mole, Pinatas, Tomer and Tango. (LOTS going on in this city!!!)
I started my third day in Mexico City with a free walking tour of the city provided by my hostel.
We went all over the city, National Palace holds these gorgeous Diego Rivera Murals. I'm pretty sure these I had seen back in 2000 as well, but I definitely appreciated them much more this time around!

I believe we're exiting the National Palace here. Not positive though.
Ceiling in some other historical building. Sorry, I didn't take notes.
Same historical building with the ceiling.
Huge, 2-story, Pasteleria! These cakes were incredible!

Just take a large plater, tongs and go to town...simply pick out what you want!

Okay...this is the before shot...different day here. I'm in the square with my new friend Tomer (you'll see him later).
Here's the prep for my "tattoo" that I'm about to get in the zocalo.
Getting the henna ready.
And on it goes!
5 minutes later, I've got a henna tattoo. Yes, Mom...it's temporary. :-)
Final product. Cool, huh? Not for life though. Not my style.
Same day in the zocalo...these people stand in line to get blessed or cleansed or something aztec-ish.

Tons of very old buildings and churches...sometimes, they're leaning, I swear!
Pretty, huh?
Not sure about this...I think there's some Noche Santa coming up that these idols are in tribute to.
This is my favorite building in Mexico City. It's the Bellas Artes Museum with more huge murals inside as well as auditoriums for opera and the like.
Having coffee with Tomer on the 8th floor of the Sears building overlooking Bellas Artes.
This is China town...or rather China block in Mexico City....very small.
Yummy tortilla soup from VIPS (sorta like a Mexican Denny's). The recipe hasn't changed in 8 years since I had it last in Acapulco.
YUM!
There's always something different going on in the Zocalo. This day there was a huge wrestling match. You can see the Mexican wrestler on the big screen in the middle of the photo. They LOVE the wrestling here.
Near the Museo de Anthropologia.
In front of the Anthropology Museum.
Huge sculpture that represents all the different pueblas and parts of Mexican life.
HUGE wood carving.
Fruit/Juice stand outside the museum.
You just can't get tomatillos like these back home. Only in Mexico!
The following photos are from the Merced Market. Be warned...some of them are graphic!!
Well, these strawberries are pretty tame.
Told you!
You know I love to photograph me some pork from the markets. Mercado de Merced didn't disappoint.
2 seconds before I took the photo he was waving and smiling. My camera just wasn't fast enough.
Lots of chickens too.
This was a new find for me. This is a cows head, completely cleaned of all the meat.
Okay, these are a little more subdued. Spices and such for soups and moles.
More stuff for mole.
This part of the market had everything you could ever want for your pinata.
HERE'S Tomer. My friend that I met in the hostel. We had a great time exploring the city together. Thanks Tomer!
Awwww! Too cute. These kitties I found in the artesian market on the other side of town from the Merced market. Just a short Metro ride away (and only 2 pesos!)

Then we found some tango lessons going on in the park across the street.
So much walking deserves a coffee break and some time to stare out the window.
Just a little architecture for ya!
And I'll end this post, again with a view from the zocalo...Once again, they're setting up for some other event. This city is incredibly alive and there's always something going on!

Tomorrow, I'm off to Puebla...just a short 2 hour bus ride away...but sure to be completely different. Ciao!
