CANCUN
View from Laguna de Nichupte on the hotel strip in Cancun.
Beach time!
Getting ready to go out to CocoBongo in Cancun (that's my bottom bunk behind me.)
First time I've worn any makeup in about 2 months!!

Eating in the market

CHICHEN ITZA
Before the tourists....

After the tourists.

When I showed up at 8:30 there was practically no one at Chichen Itza...by 11:45 as I was leaving there must have been 20 HUGE tour buses in the parking lot. Pays to get an early start on the day. Besides...how would I be able to take calendar photos with tons of people around?! :-)

In the "Bano de Vapor" at Chichen Itza.

PALENQUE

Entrance at Palenque. Nice, huh?

VALLADOLID
Half way between Merida and Cancun, you'll find Valladolid from which it's very easy to visit Chichen Itza and some cool cenotes (underground sink holes filled with crystal clear water--doesn't sound good, but they're very cool).
Waiting for my bus in Merida to Valladolid.

I'm telling you, these taco stands offer some of the best food at BY FAR the best prices!! I can't remember the last time I ate in a "proper" restaurant.

Not too much in Valladolid except traffic. But, it's a good base for Chichen Itza and a nice way to break up a much longer bus ride from Merida to Cancun.

Rented a bike for three hours to get out to the cenotes (below). 20 pesos ($2 bucks...that's TOTAL, not per hour!) ¡ME AMO MEXICO!

I swam in this one--pretty tough to get good photos underground. Sorry. Just something you gotta see in person.
I had this one all to myself...well, except for the fish!

PROGRESSO
A 20 minute ride in a collectivo north of Merida will put you in the small beach town of Progresso. Not much to do but walk the malecon, watch some sand soccer and enjoy some very fresh ceviche! YUMMY! ¡No estaras celoso!

MERIDA, Yucatan, MX
So, this traveling thing isn't all food, friends and beer. There's lots of culture too! (No really, I'm serious!)
These photos were taken on Paseo Montejo, a nice tree-shaded walk in Merida, MX. Some of the artwork is from Mexican artists and others are from Japanese artists. Cool collection.

Here's some photos of Nomades Hostel in Merida...85 pesos/night...that's $8.50 people!!

OKAY...so there's definitely food, friends and beer involved. Thank goodness! Counterclockwise...Me, Yan from Switzerland, Jamie from France maybe, Cory from Florida, Dan from Canada and the one across me from I have no idea of his name! Opps, I forgot!
Really good food in Merida...but more on food later.

I've got more to add...(currently am actually in Cancun-after being in Campeche, then Merida, then Valladolid)...however, Blogspot is being a pain and not letting me add more phots...so here's Campeche. The posting date is when I arrived there.)
CAMPECHE, Chiapas, MX
Just arrived in Campeche...GET ME TO THE WATER!! Overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. Getting good with the timer on my camera! :-)
The center square in Campeche...one of my favorites!
This monument was just down the street from Fuerte San Miguel in Campeche...says "Todo lo puede el esfuerzo de un pueblo." ... essentially meaning, "All is doable with the effort of a town". Really cool way to enter the town of Campeche.

I really enjoyed Campeche...you've probably never heard of it, right? It's not high on the tourist itinerary...but so far one of my favorite little towns. Such a great feeling there: Great weather, the water, the market, the people, the colors, the food...everything very enjoyable. Dan, a Canadian I met in Merida, related a saying that he heard..."North Americas live inside while the rest of the world lives outside". This is very true in Campeche...the whole family would come out at night to stroll the center park, go to church, take a run, walk, bike, skateboard on the malecon (gulf boardwalk) or take their kids to the park. It seemed like every family in Campeche was at the park. Performances pop up in the park on a regular basis.
Campeche was fun, familiar and very relaxing!
They know how to do fruit in Campeche! As well as dulce. Everything in the above picture (except the pinatas) is CANDY!!!
Did you ever wonder about the plastic chickens on keychains...well, wonder no more! (for those who were at Parkway for my flying chickens spirit activity...these photos are for you!)
