Oaxaca
Oaxaca, land of beautiful churches, ex-convents, museums, mole, cobblestone streets and political protests/unrest.
A free concert in the church amphitheater the night I arrived.
The Zocalo (center square).
Church in Zocalo.
View of Cinco de Mayo Avenida. The green domed building is the Macedonio Alcala Theater.
Santo Domingo Convent and Church.
Street near convent.
Mexican landscape at the convent.
Coral trees and loungers at the convent.
Gorgeous agave.
Santo Domingo Church.
Hmmm...saw these in an artesian shop, but never saw anyone wearing them.
Cinco de Mayo and Theatre again.
Oaxaca is full of protests and political unrest. Currently there are several districts of teachers literally camped out in the zocalo (see photos below). Apparently, they are protesting for better wages and rights. Also, there's some connection to Pemex (the local gasoline giant) being privatized that the teachers don't want either.
These photos are of posters and banners that I've seen around Oaxaca. Should give you some idea as to the political climate here.

Of course, there's lots of religion too.
Oaxacan teachers camped out in the zocalo.
You can find food just about everywhere in Oaxaca.

This poster is put up by the government (from what I could understand)...it's a monthly publication of poetry.

Guelaguetza is a festival coming up, I think in July. This wall says 'If there's no solution, boycot the festival.'
A beautiful art display was held in this building. I also like the streamers.
Here's the art!

Section 22 is a school district here I believe.

Even with all the protests going on, it is happening really calmly. Oaxaca is a beautiful city that I've really enjoyed!
